Description

Animals Depicted in a Landscape.' Oil on canvas. This unsigned canvas is stamped twice on the verso allowing it to be dated. First, with the stamp: "G. Rowney & Co, 51 Rathbone Place London." This dates the canvas to 1854 - 1864. (See, the National Portrait Gallery, "British Canvas and Panel Suppliers Marks"). Second, with the stamp of the American Gallery of the French art dealer Goupil & Co, and with their 366 Broadway, New York, New York address. This other stamp dates the painting to 1854 - 1860. 17 15 /16 x 24 1/16 inches (stretcher.) No signature found. Framed.

Condition

Two old quarter sized patches at the top of the canvas. Some evidence of prior cleaning and possible restoration under UV light. Craquelure consistent with age.
