Description
French school of the late 18th century.
"Clergy commending themselves to Saint Gregory the Great".
Oil on canvas.
Size: 34 x 20 cm; 44 x 30 cm (frame).
The present canvas shows us the moment in which a group of clergymen entrust themselves in the earthly plane to Saint Gregory the Great, represented in a break of glory in the heavenly part. The saint, endowed with grandeur and monumentality, is supported by a group of cherubim who lift him up to heaven. On the earthly plane, next to the five monks reading the Holy Scriptures, the artist depicts the damned souls burning in the flames of hell. Pope Saint Gregory the Great is one of the first eight Doctors of the Church, one of the four of the Latin rite, together with Ambrose of Milan (307-397), Jerome of Stridon (346-420) and Augustine of Hippo (354-430). The other four, of the Greek rite, are Athanasius of Alexandria, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory Nazianzen and John Chrysostom. Doctor of the Church is a title given by the Pope or an Ecumenical Council to certain saints by reason of their scholarship and in recognition as eminent teachers of the faith to the faithful.
