Description
This set contains a Bowie Knife, a Grand Army of the Republic Transfer Card, and two Civil War Veteran's Medals. All these items belonged to Private John A. Wheeler, Company C of the 21st Connecticut Volunteers. The Bowie Knife was crafted from a late 18th or early 19th century Eagle Head sword and is stamped, "Osborn & Gunby" on the back edge of the blade. On the side of he blade itself is stamped "GR" with a crown. The Grand Army of the Republic Transfer Card certifies Private Wheeler as a Civil War Veteran giving his post, rank, and length of time served. Private Wheeler volunteered August 12, 1862 as a carpenter and was discharged on January 18, 1863. Certificate is dated April 23, 1900. The first medal is a The Grand Army of the Republic Badge. It was authorized by Congress to be worn on the uniform by Union veterans. The Second Medal bears the US Shield and the emblems of all five period military divisions. Condition: Good, even darkening on knife, certificate is faded but still legible, heavy patina on medals one medal has a ripped ribbon.
