Catalog Note:
Robert Lostutter is a Chicago based artist and a member of the Chicago Imagists. Sharing his interest in figurative based imagery with his contemporaries, Lostutter creates fascinating and imaginative composite figures. He enjoys blurring the distinctions between humans, plants and animals, often creating beautifully colorful portraits of human/bird hybrids.
Lostutter is renowned for his incredibly detailed watercolor process. He originally created watercolors as studies for his larger oil paintings. However, by the 1970s, Lostutter saw the merits of refining his watercolor method and it quickly became his medium of choice.
His work may be found in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian Institution, the Kansas City Art Institute and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
