Description
1754 Tacitus Annals & Histories Roman Empire Nero Theodore Ryckius Latin 3v
“The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.”
― Tacitus, The Annals
Cornelius Tacitus was a 1st-century Roman historian who is now remembered for his two major works – Annals and Histories – in which he examines the lives and political careers of important Roman emperors such as Tiberius, Nero, and Claudius. By many accounts, Tacitus is considered the greatest Roman historian, not only by the accuracy of his content, but through demonstrating the psychological nature of ancient Roman politics.
Histories is one of the first written accounts to discuss the Great Jewish Revolt, an account that openly records combative attitudes between Jews and other cultures. Annals was Tacituss final work and covers the era following the death of Caesar Augustus, including the reigns of Claudius, Caligula, and Nero. It is also the earliest known secular history to mention Jesus Christ in which Tacitus connects Nero to the persecution of early Christians.
