Description
Pair German Gebruder Friedlander 800 silver candelabra, 145.4 ozt
Height: 22.5"
Davids notes: These are solid 800 silver and are marked, 800, Crown and half Moon, and G. Friedlander (for Gebruder Friedlander). There is a white cement or plaster disc on the bottom of both, to weigh them down. Both are hollow. The candelabra are the work of Gebruder Friedlander of Berlin, who worked for the Prussian court. The company was founded in 1829 by ZL Friedlander, who acted as warden of the Imperial mint to Friedrich Wilhelm I. Three generations of the family succeeded him, running the premises on Unter den Linden in Berlin, and receiving the royal warrant as jewelers to Princess Louise, the sister of the Kaiser. In the late nineteenth century the company worked in an eclectic range of styles and specialized in monumental centerpieces.
Provenance:
The Estate of Dr David Y Solomon, of NYC, heart surgeon and avid collector of rare French, Middle Eastern and African antiques as well as Fine Art, Antiquities and furniture. All removed from his NYC residence. Dr. Solomon was born in Kuwait and grew up in Iraq then fled religious persecution, escaping to Iran before emigrating to the United States in 1961 with the help of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. He practiced medicine for 67 years because of a true devotion to people. He took a personal interest in every single patient regardless of their stature. He never turned anyone away and they came from all around the world to see him, some even calling him "Papa."
