Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wonderful, mold-made pottery sculpture of a right foot wearing a gladiator sandal. The broad foot presents a graceful arch, round heal, and carefully delineated toes, all atop a thick sole of the sandal. A rope strap ties around the toes, securing the sandal in place with a button at the center, while a shield like leather covering with 4 petite buttons covers the top of the foot and lower leg, protecting this area from harm. Lovely remains of creamy white and vibrant red pigments adorn the surface. Note the artist's superb attention to detail as evident in the recessed toenails and careful delineation of the strapping elements of the shoe. A fine addition to any established collection or an impressive piece sure to start your collection on the right foot!
