Description
The Sea 1 by Herman Maril Lithograph on Paper. Signed Bottom Right and Editioned 32/40. Measuring Approximately: Frame: 16" x 20" Image 12" x 16" From the private collection of notable artist Mervin Jules.
Bio: Herman Maril painted landscapes, seascapes, and interior scenes in a simplified style that reduced figures and objects to their essential forms. A Baltimore native, Maril studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art from 1926–28. During the Depression he worked on Works Progress Administration projects, painting murals in post offices in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Alta Vista, Virginia. In 1934 Maril relocated to Cape Cod, where his work was discovered by Duncan Phillips, the founder of the Phillips Collection in Washington, D. C., which now owns many of his paintings. Dozens of museums would collect his work, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Baltimore Museum of Art. Maril served as a professor in the art department at the University of Maryland for over 30 years, and in 2010 the university inaugurated a permanent gallery dedicated to his works.
