Description
Even Sally Mitchell, author of “The Dictionary of British Equestrian Artists,” notes the “wide range” of dates for this London-based artist. She believes that he was painting between the years 1858 and 1909, however. I have found listings for James Clark that give his dates as 1860 to 1902, 1812 to 1884, and 1812 to 1902. Confusing things even more is that there was an important artist by the same name who lived from 1858 to 1943 whom some dealers attribute their equestrian paintings to, perhaps because of his greater name recognition.; In any case, this member of the large Clark family of British artists was, Sally Mitchell says, “heavily influenced” by John Herring, Sr. She also writes that while, like many artists, the quality of his work could vary, he was “the most artistic” of his family, and she included 3 illustrations of his work in her book. In his later years, he was known for collaborating on paintings with his son, James Albert Clark, signing these works “James Clark and Son.” James Clark was known for specializing in prize-winning farm animals, including horses. The blanket shown on the right side no doubt has the owner’s initials, indicating that this portrait of “Sweet William” was a commissioned work.; This is an inarguably handsome portrait of a beautiful animal, perfectly situated in a stable with limited detail that helps emphasize its nobility and best features. The artist’s sophisticated use of light helps to focus our attention on his subject. This very traditional painting is signed “James Clark” in the lower right corner. Although difficult to read, there is a nameplate on the bottom that gives us the horse’s name, “Sweet William.”; This work is housed in a modern, custom-made wooden frame that suits it well. The wide gilded slip is antique and does its part in showing off the character of the painting.; Although it is in excellent antique condition, I have had the painting professionally cleaned.; It measures 29 inches wide by 25-¼ inches high, including the frame.
