[ACROSTIC XMAS GIFT-BOOK]. The Song of the Angels. Philadelphia: [undated, but gift inscription dated 1838]. 16mo. signed in 8s (3 7/8 x 3 1/8in). Pp. [1-]5-63[-654]. Wood-engraved additional title. Text with an ornamental initial at the started of pp.9-63, these initials, if ‘added’ together spell out ‘Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, good will towards men’. (Some light soiling). Original limp red leather, covers ruled in gilt, the upper cover titled in gilt (lightly scuffed). Provenance: Laura E. Hunt (inscripion, noting the gift of the book from 'Geo. O. Bartlett', dated 1st March 1838). A charming Christmas conceit – each of the pages with an initial is a Bible extract. The initials form a type of acrostic, the message being 'Spells out ‘Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, good will towards men'.
