The Letter: Hand-written on personal stationery (dated 26 December 1956) from Andre Maurois to his French-to-English translator, Gerald Hopkins. Mauroir was in Dordogne, France, writing final chapters of what has become the definitive biography of Alexandre Dumas and three generations of Dumas family authors. Mauroir is under time pressure as his publishers had planned a joint publication date in early 1957. He admits to not having reread the last sections of Hopkins' latest translation, and instructs Hopkins to feel free to cross out "anything that might be uninteresting to British readers."
