Description
Isaac Maxwell (20th C., San Antonio, TX) punched copper and metal chandelier light fixture, featuring etched accents
35"h x 9"s
Provenance: Removed from a former James Avery Jewlery location (San Antonio, Texas)
The spectacle of intricately patterned silhouette lighting is a distinctive experience provided by Isaac Maxwell's punched metal lighting. Softly diffused light beams through precise perforations, sending a pattern of light and shadow over the wall of a room, porch, or patio. This style of lighting originally came from Mexico in the form of paper or tin candle holders called luminarias. The method of puncturing tin to create patterns and designs dates back to the 1800s. Esteemed architect Isaac Maxwell's Mexican-style punched metalwork can be seen in the Tower of Americas, the lobby of Frost Bank downtown, and the mid-century modern homes he designed, many of which are located in the Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, and Olmos Park neighborhoods.
