Description
Oil painting by Ernest Narjot, possibly in original gilt frame, with brass label. The frame size is: 34 x 28". Image size: 26.5 x 21.5". Signed by Narjot in lower right. Dated: 1865. This painting is the original, not a reproduction. The canvas, as marked on the back was made by Snow & Roos. Several labels of differing dates on the back, possibly from auction sales through time. This is a magnificent painting of three children, clearly a commissioned work. Narjot's control of facial detail is excellent, as well as other areas of the painting, including the dog, to which he wanted to draw attention. Narjot, 1826-1898 was born in Saint-Malo, France, brought up in Paris, and joined the California Gold Rush in 1849. Narjot continued with mining ventures in California and Mexico, before returning to San Francisco, where established a gallery in 1865. Interestingly, Narjot is not listed in Bancroft. Narjot is included in Vincent's book, "O California!", 1990, as one of California's most prominent artists. He was commissioned to paint the ceiling of Leland Stanford's tomb, during which he lost sight in one eye during an accident in the course of painting. Narjot was an early member of the Bohemian Club, and as such was on par with Keith and Hill. Narjot taught at the California School of Design. He is considered one of California's 30 great artists.
