Unissued stock certificate #35 for Puget Sound and Alaska Steamship Co. shares @ $100 each. Organized under the laws of Washington. Green border. Vignette of steamboat at top center of certificate. Rare, Excellent condition. Printed: Franklin Bank Note Company N.Y. Regular monthly boat service from U.S. ports to Alaska began in 1867 following the purchase of Alaska from Russia. 1st tourists began booking passage as reports of beautiful scenery were publicized. Aug. 3, 1894, Alaska Steamship Co. was formed by 6 men. Charles Peabody became president. On Jan. 21, 1895, the Alaska Steamship Co. was finalized. 1st vessel purchased was the 140-foot steamer WILLAPA. At end of 1897, Peabody reorganized Alaska Steamship Co. expanding due to Klondike gold discovery. In 1898 Puget Sound Navigation Co. started as an inland water subsidiary. Co. was registered in Nevada due to lenient corporate laws. Beginning of 20th century began many increases in southeast Alaskan marine travel including religious missions being established, fish canneries were being built and gold had been discovered.
