Oil on canvas, measurements: 93 x 155 cm. Modest Urgell was born in 1839 in Barcelona, ​​he studied at the Escuela de la Lonja, being a disciple of Ramón Martí Alsina. He spent time in Paris, where he treated Gustave Courbet, and subscribed to realism. In the 1860s his works were rejected as too advanced, and he too exhibited unsuccessfully in Madrid. In 1870 he went to Olot, where he was related to Joaquín Vayreda, creator of a landscape school in this city of La Garrotxa that influenced Urgell, devoting himself mainly to landscape since then. Between 1870 and 1880 Urgell spent time in Gerona, in contact with his childhood friend Rafael Masó Pagés. He regularly exhibited at the Sala Parés since its foundation in 1877, and was successful at the national exhibitions in Madrid in 1876, 1892 and 1895, where he obtained (together with Joaquín Sorolla and Alberto Pla y Rubio) one of the first class medals with El Pedregal, civilized town; he also won the highest decorations at the Barcelona exhibitions of 1894, 1896 and 1898, and participated in exhibitions in Philadelphia and Munich. Founder of the Artistic and Literary Society of Catalonia, from 1894 he was professor of landscape at the Lonja. His work focuses mainly on lonely landscapes and seascapes, with a sad and mysterious atmosphere, often with locations in cemeteries and hermitages, in a style sometimes compared to that of Arnold Böcklin. He was quite successful in his time, with works at the MNAC, at the provincial museums of Gerona, Palma de Mallorca and Lugo, at the Hamburg Kunsthalle, etc. He brought together reproductions of a large part of his work in the album Catalonia (1905). As a writer, He published various plays: Lluny dels ulls (1898), Un terròs de sucre (1898), Longing! (1899), By (1901), Value (1907); he also wrote his autobiography: The Bat.
