AZIMUTH COMPASS Germany, Circa 1810 Unsigned. Gimbal mounted, with a pristine 6.5-inch compass card marked in points and tenths of degrees and with a jeweled pivot, and the original sight vanes. Original dovetailed box with blackened brass carrying handles. Box height 6.5". Width 9.75". Depth 9.75". Provenance: The West Sea Company, Old Town, San Diego, California, 1986. Purchased from the above by the The Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts. The azimuth compass was extensively used from 1770 to 1820 to determine compass variation and deviation from true North using meridian passage of the sun.
