Description
19th C. Stoneware Size 2 Gallon Jug w/ Large Cobalt Blue Leaf and Handle. This jug is likely dated to the 19th Century or earlier due to the absence of bottom markings and its handmade quality. With a large bold blue leaf marking, its style is reminiscent of the designs of early jugs and crocks made by Whites Utica out of NY, however this origin has not been confirmed. Number 2 impressed near top. Cylindrical with straighter sides but retaining a subtly ovoid shape typical of earlier jug forms. Irregular colors really make this an impressive example of early American stoneware from any facet, but the unusually large freehand leaf really stands out.
