Indonesian Hudoq mask of wild boar, early 20thc
7"W x 9"D x 12.5"H (15.5" mounted)

Bahau Dayak, East Kalimantan, Borneo depicting a Topeng Babi (wild boar), used in agricultural rite dances designed to assure success and protection for the rice crops. Hudoq is a masked dance performed during Erau harvest thanksgiving festival of many of sub-groups of the Dayak ethnic group of East Kalimantan province, Indonesia. The Hudoq culture and performance is indigenous among Dayak population of East Kalimantan province, and it is said to have originated from Mahakam Ulu Regency. This mask is carved of wood with protruding jaw/snout, large disc eyes and hornbill type bridge, painted overall in white with red and black pigments in a tattoo design, complete with rattan woven hat, and rattan bite post on the interior, all mounted on a contemporary metal stand.
Condition
Good condition overall; minor losses to the pigments, genuine patina from use and age.
