Classical World, Italy, Etruria, Etruscan culture, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A beautiful example of a wheel-thrown pottery olpe presenting a spherical body, a cylindrical neck, a flared rim with a gently pinched pouring spout, and a strap handle arching along the verso, all atop a squat foot. The upper shoulder is decorated with a register of pecked comet-like patterns with expanding tails, and 2 sets of wheel-cut concentric lines adorn the middle and lower body. The entire vessel is enveloped with lustrous glaze in a jet-black hue, characteristic of fine Bucchero ware stylization. Size: 3.9" W x 5.4" H (9.9 cm x 13.7 cm)

Bucchero is a specifically Etruscan technique for firing pottery which results in a smooth, lustrous black glaze. This type of vessel may have been buried with offerings in the tombs of recently deceased individuals, as was the case for much fine Etruscan pottery.

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000
