East Europe, Greece, Eastern Orthodox, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fabulous wood icon, skillfully hand-carved with the relief image of the Virgin Mary embracing the Christ child. The letters "MP / OV" - an abbreviation of the Greek "Mater Theos" or the mother of God - are inscribed in the upper right corner of the image. A suspension hole is drilled on the top periphery to the verso, allowing the piece to be worn as a pendant or hung for display, perhaps as a Christmas ornament. Size: 2" W x 2.6" H (5.1 cm x 6.6 cm); 3.9" H (9.9 cm) on included custom stand.
