Description
Circa 332-32 BC, Ptolemaic PeriodWearing a plumed headdress, leonine face and dwarf body. Sections of amulet highlighted in paler coloured glaze.The dwarf-like figure of Bes was regarded as a protective deity who averted the evil eye and helped woman in childbirth, as well as protecting children through to adulthood. His image is found on head rests, beds and mirrors and cosmetic pots; his amulets are most often made of glazed composition, sometimes polychrome. He was a deity for whom there we no temples, but he is depicted in temple sites associated with the divine birth of a god, such as at the Birth House at the temple of Denderah.
