Description
Cotton fiber woven in two strips sewn together in the middle, with linear borders on each side, and overall geometric pattern with branches, hooks, diamond shapes, some suggestive of animals, people and insects. The design changes subtly as it progresses up the cloth, giving a narrative power to the design. Fine thread, tightly woven, natural dyes. Approx. 72" x 36". Acquired in the 1970s-1980 by the original owner, who purchased a number of antique Indonesian textiles from Anita E. Spertus and Robert J. Holmgren, authors of "Early Indonesian Textiles from Three Island Cultures", published 1989 in conjunction with the exhibit "Early Indonesian Textiles from Three Island Cultures" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC.Provenance: Estate of Cayce Odom of Charlottesville, VA.
