Greek Hellenistic Pottery Theater Mask Applique
Item Details
Description
Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A large, mold-formed pottery applique depicting a theatrical actor's mask with characteristic features such as a dramatically furrowed brow, bulging eyes, flared nostrils, and an enormous, smiling mouth. Incised wrinkles across the brow as well as the backswept coiffure suggest this was meant to portray an elderly figure, perhaps a male in a comedic theater performance. Size: 3.8" W x 4.7" H (9.7 cm x 11.9 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired prior to 2000
