Description
Western Europe, Spain, ca. 17th century CE. A fine example of an intact iron cabasset helmet! The cabasset was worn by infantry during the pike and shot formations, and this helmet is an excellent and nearly pristine example! The cabasset is constructed from an iron sheet that is hammered and molded into a highly domed shape. A narrow brim encircles the base with rivets studded across the crown, and on the interior are remains of leather from the lining / cushioning still partially attached to the rivets. At the front is a tubular iron piece or plume socket riveted just above the brim. The cabasset was a form that originated in Italy and was created from the early 16th to early 17th centuries. While similar to the Spanish morion helmet in that it has a flat brim and a peaked form, it does not share the crest/comb that adorns the Spanish morion. Size: 11" L x 9.25" W x 9" H (27.9 cm x 23.5 cm x 22.9 cm)
