Four American Typewriters
1) Bar-Lock No. 14, c. 1909, Columbia Typewriter Co., New York. American typebar machine with wonderfully decorative Art-Nouveau-styled pressed copper front plate, invented by Charles Spiro. Rusty, not working. - Literature: Martin, 1949, p. 102. (4/4) - 2) "Underwood No. 5", 1900 onwards, the most successful typewriter design in history, later almost every typewriter imitated the Underwood, mechanism a bit stiff, in need of cleaning. (3/3-4) - 3) "Smith Premier No. 10", c. 1910, Smith-Premier Typewriter Company, Syracuse, the only frontstroke typewriter with a full keyboard, 84 keys in seven rows, carriage movement defective. (3/4) - And: 4) "Remington Standard No. 5", c. 1895, upstroke machine, wood typebars, some parts loose, with tin cover and wood base. (3/4)
