Description
This is a very impressive and colorful battle flag from the submarine USS Guavina SS-362. The Guavina was very successful during World War 2 fighting the Japanese Navy and aiding in rescues. The flag shows that the Guavina sank 13.5 Japanese merchant ships and 1 Japanese warship. It aided in the rescue of 5 aircraft, 8 airmen, and 4 men rescued in a lifeboat. At the bottom of the flag are the theaters of operation the submarine was involved in.
The flag measures 31 inches wide and 25 inches tall. It is made of a thin fabric with each image sewn onto it. The colors are very vibrant. Our consignor had this flag in a frame and out of the sunlight. We have no evidence of this flag being flown on the submarine. It is possible a crewman onboard the Guavina made this flag as a memento, which has survived in its current excellent condition.
