Harding Black (1912-2004) was a San Antonio based studio-potter known for his extensive glaze research. Getting his introduction to pottery as a member of the Witte Museum's Archeological Society, he became interested in producing as well as studying the history of pottery. He became a self-taught chemist, reproducing ancient Chinese and Oriental glazes which he famously shared with the public. In 2008, he donated his research, glaze recipes, and personal documents to the Smithsonian Research Collection. Today, he is considered a pioneer of modern hand-made Texan pottery.
