Prehistoric Anasazi Tularosa Black-On-White Pitcher
Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Four Corners region, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), ca. 1150 to 1325 CE. A fine hand-built pottery pitcher displaying mesmerizing Tularosa black-on-white decorations. The body is a bulbous form resting on a rounded, but stable base, resolving in a cylindrical neck and slightly flared rim. A strap handle bridges the neck to the upper shoulder and 2 petite tabs or lugs on the handle may have helped secure a lid or stopped in place. The chalky white surface is decorated with an intricate program of abstract geometric motifs: interlocking triangular and stepped shaped upon a register of thin, vertical lines. Size: 6.6" Diameter x 6.5" H (16.8 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private S.S. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA; ex-private Atlanta, Georgia, USA collection, acquired in 2009
