Description
Western Europe, Spain, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. This remarkable conical earthenware jug has a specialized shape to rest upright in storage racks or once arriving in port, in the earth, via the unusually long and tapered tip. The flared rim leads into the bulbous shoulders that gradually narrows to a tapered tip. These cone shaped jars were used for storing provisions bound for trade in the colonies, and are often known as olive jars or botijas, and were sealed with cork and pitch. These pieces are often found at the bottom of the ocean as part of shipwrecks, as this piece can attest to; the interior hosts white casings from marine worms and other formations from resting at the bottom of the sea! Size: 13" L x 7.25" W (33 cm x 18.4 cm)
