⁂ In 1830 Richard Lander led an expedition in the company of his younger brother, John, to explore the course and termination of the Niger river; despite being robbed and imprisoned, the Landers succeeded in penetrating further than Mungo Park, past Bussa to Yaoorie. Richard, for his role in the expedition, received the first ever gold medal from the Royal Geographical Society and John Murray offered the brothers one thousand guineas to publish their journals.
