A charming English Victorian period oak cabinet composed of an earlier coffer, c. 17th or 18th century with 19th century additions. As coffers became obsolete, it became popular to convert them into other pieces of furniture that were more appealing to a 19th century audience. Apocryphal dates were added at this time to give an air of history, such as the inset "1774" seen in this piece. They were often additionally carved to give the piece an antique look. Even though not strictly historically correct, these Victorian carve-ups remain popular for their usefulness and look great in traditional homes as well as rustic man caves.
