Description
East Asia, China, Song Dynasty, ca. 960 to 1279 CE. A lovely Qingbai ware funerary vessel used in southern China to hold grain and other offerings inside of a tomb. Enveloped in celadon and peach-hued glazes, the ancient vessel presents a columnar body with a flared foot, a gently rounded shoulder, an elongated neck, and a broad rim. The base of the neck is adorned by applied, relief decoration of several bearded men arranged in a horizontal band, all smiling and wearing lengthy, hooded robes. Vine-like vegetal and floral decoration embellishes the area above them as an undulating lip encircles the area just below the wide rim. Qingbai ware (translated as "greenish white") is indicative of the faint, sage-green glaze that covers the pale orange pottery beneath and is arguably the first mass-produced type of porcelain to be used for exporting and burial wares. Size: 3.5" Diameter x 17.4" H (8.9 cm x 44.2 cm)
