Western Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. This is a superb glass intaglio of Mars and Bellona set in a square 58.4% (equivalent to 14K) gold swivel bezel and made wearable with a modern cord. The opaque red glass is engraved with a double bust portraiture of the god Mars and his wife Bellona, both in profile, and Mars is positioned in front wearing a crested helmet, and a spear over his shoulder, behind but slightly forward is Bellona. This intaglio is styled after a famous cameo made by Charles Brown (1749-1795) that was owned by Catherine the Great and currently kept at the Hermitage Museum. The bezel is comprised of a thick setting that encircles the periphery of the intaglio, and the arched a curling wire that the bezel articulates on adds visual interest and contains a suspension loop. This lovely pendant is strung on a modern cord with a lobster clasp and is wearable.
