BIOGRAPHY:
Best known for his ski and travel posters from the 1930s and 1940s, Maurer was born in Germany. His father was a painter who died when Maurer was young, leaving him his watercolors and palette. Using his father's tools, Maurer began to paint in the Bavarian Alps during his vacations. He then studied art at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and also studied independently with poster artist and watercolorist Ludwig Hohlwein. After four years in the navy during World War I, Maurer moved first to Brazil and then to the United States. He worked for a brief time for well-known poster artist Lucien Bernhard before opening his own studio, where he produced book jackets, magazine covers, advertisements, packaging, and posters. Maurer's ski and travel posters demonstrated his great love for both skiing and travel; his ski posters illustrated the glamour as well as the thrill of the sport. Maurer eventually moved to the country and earned his living creating watercolors for resort and travel advertising as well as calendars and Christmas cards. His work is found in various private and institutional collections. He received many awards for his watercolors.
