Alexander Kalugin studied at the studio of the artist Vladimir Weisberg (1965-1967) and the studio of Boris Kozlov (1970-1971) in Moscow. Exhibited at residential and informal exhibitions, as well as expositions of nonconformist artists. In 1998 Kalugin received the First and Second Prizes in the competition for the best graphics and painting at the International Festival of Contemporary Art in Florida, USA. Fairy-tale, philosophical, phantasmagoric paintings-parables in the style of fantastic realism resemble collages, in which both the folklore grotesque of Russian popular prints and the grotesque images of Hieronymus Bosch are involved.
