Two 11" hand-carved pearwood dolls with hand-stitched costumes by the girls of the Door of Hope Mission, Chinese circa first half 20th century. The Door of Hope Mission was a Protestant mission in Shanghai that sheltered destitute young girls; among the girls' tasks was learning to create handmade doll clothing for a variety of character dolls celebrating their Chinese culture and heritage.

The first doll is the "Shanghai Municipal Policeman": considered one of the rarest in the series, he is dressed in a navy blue coat and wide-brimmed hat for shade. The second is "Amah," a nanny in a cotton jacket and black hat, with a 5" child on her back draped in a silk blanket. Each has a stand supplied.

Very good condition. Each doll is all original and complete, with no breaks to the wood and no tears to the garments. Minor dings, and expected aging to the garments.
