Description
Desk. Hong Kong, second half of the 19th century.
Carved Hongmu wood.
Signed on the locks of the drawers.
Measurements: 123 x 95 x 56 cm.
Desk made entirely of Hongmu wood, a material that allows Chinese carpenters to carve elaborate patterns or landscapes or to make luxury furniture reminiscent of Imperial China. Raised on four legs in the cabriole style, the piece of furniture has a smooth top with three lockable drawers at its waist. Below them is an openwork border. A second body, which stands out in height, like a sample desk, is divided into two levels, with drawers and compartments differentiated on the front. The piece of furniture is crowned with a highly decorative openwork border.
