Jalk, considered one of the most influential designers of Danish modernism, studied cabinetmaking at the Copenhagen School of Design for Women between 1940 and 1942, and completed her training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts with the influential designer Kaare Klint. In 1946 she won first prize in the annual competition of the Cabinetmakers' Guild, and five years later her designs were much admired at the 1951 Milan Triennale.
Jalk is known for its well-thought-out designs, carefully tailored to the needs of future owners, and for embracing technological and social progress, which were realised by leading manufacturers such as Henning Jensen, Poul Jeppesen and Fritz Hansen. By the 1960s, Jalk had developed its own distinctive style, which led to the establishment of a new style with a modern character that reflected the needs of the time.
Little information is available on the Danish furniture manufacturer P. Jeppesen Møbelfabrik A/S, although the company achieved great success between the 1940s and 1960s, producing the designs of the well-known designers Ole Wanscher (1903-1985) and Grete Jalk (1920-2006), along with the work of lesser-known designers such as Wilhelm Wohlert, Gorm Lindum, Jørgen Posborg, Troels Grum-Schwensen and Morten Gøttler.
Among P. Jeppesen's most notable designs are the Colonial Chair PJ-149 (1949), the Rungstedlund Dining Chair (c. 1950) and the PJ-112 Sofa (1951) by Wanscher, as well as the iconic post-war GJ Chair, also known as the Shell Chair (1963) designed by Jalk.
