Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd century CE. This is a stunning ancient 92% (equivalent to 22K+) gold ring with a carnelian intaglio set into an ovoid bezel. The band is thick with a scrolling volute openwork shoulder reminiscent of lyres that support the close-backed bezel. The bezel lip is form fitting around the orange carnelian intaglio of Bonus Eventus, the Roman deity of success. He faces right holding a libation or fruit bowl in on hand and the other holds a pair of corn-ears. A signet ring of such high-quality gold and with a semi-precious stone was undoubtably the possession of a wealthier man. The solid band has a flattened interior and the surfaces have been professionally cleaned and are intact and wearable!
