Very interesting hand-colored map created at a pivotal time in the settlement of the American West. In this lovely Civil War era map many of the western states have still not settled their borders. Arizona has yet to cede its upper northwest tip to Nevada, which will eventually gain a portion of Utah’s western border. At this point, Utah appears a little wider than today. Montana and Idaho are still hashing out their common border, which will continue to vary for a few years until they reach their current status. Wyoming Territory has yet to appear. Dakota Territory is in a very unusual configuration and Oklahoma at this time is still called Indian Territory. Numerous gold and silver mines shown in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho and Montana. Other types of mines shown in Utah, Nevada and what will eventually become Wyoming. Many western forts named and located, especially in Texas. Early western railroad lines depicted, along with proposed routes. Both the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroad routes shown. Numerous Indian tribes located throughout.
