GEORG PENCZ Tomyris, shown nude from behind, placing the head of Cyrus into a sack held by a soldier, the decapitated body of Cyrus on the ground at her feet, from a series of four mythological scenes Vintage Engraving Print, original etching circa 1539, inscription to upper left reads Tamaris., subject shows Tomyris placing the head of Cyrus into a sack held by a soldier with the headless body of Cyrus at their feet. Window measures approx 4 3/4 x 2 3/4 in., frame measures approx 7 3/4 x 6 1/4 in., gold toned ornate wood frame, surface wear to frame, professionally framed, not examined out of frame. Georg Pencz (c. 1500 – 11 October 1550) was a German engraver, painter and printmaker. Pencz was probably born in Westheim near Bad Windsheim/Franconia. He travelled to Nuremberg in 1523 and joined Albrecht Dürer’s atelier. Like Dürer, he visited Italy and was profoundly influenced by Venetian art; it is believed he worked with Marcantonio Raimondi.
