Description
A very rare blue cloth patch worn by a recently liberated prisoner of the Theresienstadt Ghetto, 7.5 x 2.5 in., stamped with 'K.L. Terezin.' Theresienstadt was liberated by the Red Army on May 8, 1945. When medical units arrived, they found the surviving population starving and suffering from an epidemic of typhoid fever, for which a quarantine was quickly setup to contain. Once it was lifted, the ghetto was used as center for the repatriation of prisoners. A patch such as this would have been worn by a liberated inhabitant of Theresienstadt before the ghetto was dissolved. According to our consignor, this section of cloth was verified by the Terezin Museum in the modern Czech Republic.
