Description
Beautiful stenciled and hand-painted regimental beer stein of the 2nd Company, 23rd Infantry Regiment, from Landau, Bavaria, issued to 'Sanitatssoldat Gefreiter Schneider', a medic lance corporal. Schneider, holding a very unusual rank title, served from 1899-1901, the typical two years of an infantry reservist. The porcelain stein stands 10.75 in. tall overall and displays three scenes, including soldiers around a camp fire, in the field with their standard, and the main scene showing them celebrating in Landau with a few Fräuleins about as well. The images are flanked by two rosters containing the names of the owner's fellow regiment members. The stein is topped by a lid depicting a soldier with a canteen in his hand, with a Bavarian crowned rampant lion atop the handle. A see-through litho pane in the bottom of the stein shows a peasant sharing a drink with a lady in a tavern. Fine condition.
