A Chinese Embroidered Chestnut Silk Dragon Robe,
19th century, likely Xianfeng Period (1851-1861), having satin stitch and densely couched gold threads throughout, with writhing five-clawed dragons amongst clusters of clouds, bats and flaming pearls, the lower register having crashing waves containing auspicious symbols above diagonal bands of polychrome embroidery, the sleeves having black silk arms with raised banding terminating in horsehoof form cuffs with decoration of dragons, the interior with a pale blue silk lining.
