Pre-Columbian, Central America, Guatemala, Peten Region, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A lovely set of 2 hand-built pottery bowls from the ancient Maya. The first bowl has a round but stable base, a carinated midsection, and a thick rim that overhangs the shallow basin; the exterior surfaces are decorated with pseudo-glyphs in red and orange pigments. The larger vessel features a flat base and a thin rim, with a repeating register of abstract creatures encircling the basin interior, and with spirals, steps, netted patterns, and abstract geometric motifs along the exterior. Size of largest: 6.75" W x 2.6" H (17.1 cm x 6.6 cm)

Larger bowl has one stable hairline fissure stemming from rim. Both bowls have abrasions and nicks commensurate with age, light fading to pigment, and a couple of spalls along the exterior surfaces, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to pigment and wonderful manganese deposits throughout.
