Description

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early 20th century CE. A petite adze blade that is hand-carved from mottled pistachio-hued stone with integral gray veins. The trapezoidal tool features a tapered butt end, a thick midsection, and a sharpened blade edge that was perhaps used for utilitarian purposes. Adze blades like this example were typically fastened to a lengthy wooden pole with reeds or leather straps and were primarily used to shape and smooth large pieces of wood. Size: 3.4" L x 1.375" W (8.6 cm x 3.5 cm)
