Provenance letter from consignor:
"These quilts are from the estate of Hobbs Freeman who passed away, June 17, 2009. I knew Hobbs a little but was good friends with his best friend, Gordon Cotton, who passed away in 2020. Gordon Cotton was a local historian and writer and he and Hobbs lived by each other on the same property. When I acquired the quilts from the estate, I went to Gordon about them because they are so unique. He told me that Hobbs' parents had owned a country store in Fayette, MS. He said it was his understanding that the quilts had been traded for goods at the store by some of their poor customers. Hobbs' parents were Eloise Gaugh b. 1917 and Dumont Sidney Freeman b. 1910. Fayette is a very small town and most of its population has always been very poor. My best deduction is the quilts are 80-100 years old and were crafted by African Americans from Fayette, MS."
