Item/Description: Decorative hand carved dramatic Galoa Gabon style mask. The Galoa people of western Gabon were hunters before turning to agriculture and fishing. Masks of this genre , known as okukwe, were made for ceremonies, rites of passage, funerals and initiation rituals. Believed to disperse ‘evil powers and spirits’. Painted white with red/ black striations. The central, vertical arrangement of black or dark brown colored, divided triangles on the kaolin white mask face are typical of this style of ‘okukwe mask’. (African mask, Galoa, Gabon, Ceremonial, Spirits, Afterlife).
