Description
Post-war Japanese artist Risaburo Kimura is known for serigraph and lithograph prints depicting imaginary cityscapes in illusory colors. Kimura studied philosophy at Hosei University. He embarked on a path as a painter in the 1960s, joining the SÅzÅ Biiku educational movement, led by artists Ay-O, Teijiro Kubo, and Matsuo Ikeda, which challenged the traditional Japanese master-student teaching model and promoted artistic freedom. In 1964, Kimura migrated to the U.S., establishing a studio in Manhattan. In the late 1960s, he produced his best-known series, “Great Cities of the World.” The more than 400 images depict vibrant and lively fictional metropolises. Kimura has been featured in solo and group shows at the Brooklyn Museum, the Guggenheim, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.Signed and numbered on bottom in pencil, "Chicago , Risaburo Kimura 1975". "Image size 22" x 16.25". Authenticity certificate on back
