Description
Gold plated star with "July 4th, 1893" on one side and "Confederate Veterans 100 Yard Dash, Strang Nicklin" on the other. It is possible that the winner was Samuel Strang Nicklin, (1876-1932) the professional baseball player (New York Giants, Chicago White Sox, Brooklyn Superbas, etc.) who went by Sammy Strang (and other permutations of his given name) in order to protect the reputation of his upper crust Chattanooga family, who were not at all pleased by his chosen career. (Assuming of course the participants in the race would have attended the Confederate veteran reunion festivities but not necessarily be veterans themselves.) Approx. 1 1/2" D. Provenance: Estate of Cayce Odom of Charlottesville, VA.
